Belgian Defense Minister Highlights Trkiye and Ukraine’s Role in Modernizing Warfare

Ankara: Belgian Defense Minister Theo Francken has emphasized the pivotal role of Trkiye and Ukraine in transforming modern warfare, particularly through advancements in drone technology, artificial intelligence, and defense systems. He urged other nations to adapt to these changing warfare dynamics by taking cues from these two countries.

According to Anadolu Agency, Francken's remarks came during Belgium's economic mission to Trkiye, where he highlighted the impact of the ongoing war in Ukraine and Trkiye's defense innovations on reshaping NATO's military doctrine. He stated, "There are two countries that really understand this - Ukraine and Trkiye. All other countries have to follow," underscoring the necessity for nations to evolve their defense strategies.

Francken described the Belgian delegation's visit as the most significant trade and economic mission in the history of Belgium-Trkiye relations, with over 100 meetings conducted with entrepreneurs and officials in Istanbul and Ankara. Numerous agreements and memorandums, including defense sector cooperation deals, were signed during the trip.

The minister emphasized the influence of Turkish defense companies, such as Baykar, on NATO's strategic outlook. He noted that visits to these companies highlighted Turkish advancements in innovation, research and development, artificial intelligence, drones, and counter-drone systems. Francken remarked, "We need to change our way of fighting as well, because otherwise others are training continuously. We have to be ready."

To enhance Belgium's military capabilities, Francken has accelerated its drone integration efforts by appointing the country's first general responsible for drone innovation. He acknowledged the initial ethical concerns surrounding drone technology but stressed the importance of keeping pace with global developments.

Belgium is currently engaged in major drone-related projects, including a counter-drone program valued at over $1 billion. The tender process for this initiative is ongoing, with a conclusion expected by the year's end. Francken highlighted opportunities for Turkish companies to participate, stating, "You are way ahead, so we have to catch up and we can learn a lot from you."

Defense cooperation between Trkiye and Belgium is already underway, involving projects with Belgian engine manufacturer ABC and Trkiye's naval and next-generation battle tank programs. During the visit, 37 agreements and letters of intent were signed, with additional deals anticipated in Ankara.

On Trkiye-EU relations, Francken expressed Belgium's support for modernizing the Customs Union between Trkiye and the European Union and advocated for Ankara's inclusion in the EU's SAFE loan mechanism. He emphasized the potential for stronger collaboration despite ongoing political disputes within the EU.

Looking ahead to the 2026 NATO summit in Ankara, Francken called for increased defense production capacity and industrial cooperation among alliance members. He noted Belgium's significant increase in defense spending but highlighted the need for enhanced production capabilities. Francken stressed the importance of NATO unity, warning, "United we stand, divided we fall."

Reflecting on the visit, Francken shared memorable experiences, including a patrol boat tour on the Bosporus and an engaging conversation with Queen Mathilde, marking her first economic mission to Trkiye.
