Brussels:Belgian Foreign Minister Maxime Prevot emphasized that the decision regarding Iran's leadership should be determined solely by its people, dismissing calls for Belgium to recognize Reza Pahlavi as a legitimate leader of the Iranian opposition.
According to Anadolu Agency – English, Prevot asserted on social media platform X that democracy dictates Iranians are the ones to decide their leadership. He responded directly to an activist, explaining that Belgium could not acknowledge Pahlavi, son of Iran's former shah, as a legitimate representative or a unifying figure for the Iranian democratic opposition.
Prevot acknowledged that various individuals and movements have claimed to represent the Iranian opposition, highlighting the diversity within both the opposition and the Iranian diaspora. He advocated for an inclusive approach that honors this diversity.
Furthermore, Prevot clarified his stance regarding Pahlavi's potential visit to Belgium's parliament. While advocating for a broader engagement with different Iranian opposition groups, he respected the parliament's autonomy in deciding against hosting Pahlavi.
In addition, Prevot defended Belgium's diplomatic relations with Iran, opposing a proposal to expel Iran's ambassador. He argued that maintaining communication channels is essential for conveying firm messages and monitoring developments.
Prevot emphasized that diplomatic engagement does not preclude imposing sanctions. Belgium plans to continue condemning human rights violations in Iran while supporting democratic aspirations and considering further sanctions if needed.
Belgium's House of Representatives recently decided not to host Pahlavi officially, following recommendations from the Foreign Ministry. However, the Reform Movement, which extended the initial invitation, may still engage with him privately.
The report also noted that the US and Israel initiated military action against Iran in February, aiming to dismantle its nuclear capabilities and instigate regime change, with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu advocating for the latter as he seeks reelection.
