Brussels: Belgium is contemplating the deployment of minehunters to the Strait of Hormuz, as announced by Belgian Foreign Minister Maxime Prevot. This comes in response to the current geopolitical tensions in the region which have impacted global economic stability.
According to Anadolu Agency, Prevot emphasized Belgium's willingness to contribute to an international coalition aiming to secure the strait once conditions stabilize. He mentioned that French President Emmanuel Macron had previously discussed the matter with Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever, and Belgium's involvement would be part of a 32-country coalition, sharing responsibilities proportionately.
Prevot clarified that Belgium's potential participation should not be interpreted as support for the US-Israeli military actions in Iran, which he criticized as being outside international law. He highlighted the importance of managing the situation carefully due to its significant impact on European economies, warning against premature declarations of victory following US claims of success in Iran.
Belgian Defense Minister Theo Francken further confirmed Belgium's commitment on social media platform X, stating that the country is collaborating with France and other partners to ensure free maritime passage through the Strait of Hormuz, contingent on regional conditions such as a ceasefire. Francken underscored the importance of navigation freedom for security and economic stability.
The urgency of securing the strait has been underscored by recent developments. On March 2, Iran imposed navigation restrictions in the Strait of Hormuz, threatening to attack vessels that attempt passage without coordination. The strait is a crucial transit route for oil tankers, with approximately 20 million barrels passing through daily. Its disruption has led to increased oil prices, shipping, and insurance costs, raising global economic concerns.
The situation in the region has been tense since the US and Israel initiated an air offensive on Iran on February 28, resulting in significant casualties, including the death of then-Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. In retaliation, Tehran has launched drone and missile strikes against Israel, Jordan, Iraq, and Gulf countries hosting US military assets.
