Brussels: Belgian Foreign Minister Maxime Prevot expressed concerns over the joint operation conducted by the US and Israel against Iran, stating that it does not align with international law standards. Prevot made these remarks during an interview with broadcaster RTBF, emphasizing Belgium's commitment to upholding international law.

According to Anadolu Agency, Prevot refrained from directly condemning the intervention but highlighted the essential purpose of international law in protecting people's rights and freedoms. He noted that while Iran may not exemplify adherence to these standards, the manner of the US-Israel operation was not defensible under international law. Prevot voiced his regret over the failure of diplomatic efforts and urged a swift return to diplomacy and international law.

He further called for de-escalation and a cessation of hostilities, advocating for restraint and a renewed respect for diplomatic channels. Prevot also expressed concern over the lack of UN involvement in the conflict, suggesting that the organization should not limit its focus solely to human rights and climate issues. He warned against the UN becoming ineffective in conflict prevention and resolution.

Prevot mentioned the emergence of new initiatives like the "Board of Peace" proposed by former US President Donald Trump, stressing Belgium's support for multilateralism and international law as crucial tools for conflict prevention. He reiterated the importance of these instruments in maintaining global peace, especially in light of recent events.

The US and Israel launched a significant attack on Iran on Saturday, resulting in the deaths of several top Iranian leaders, including Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. In retaliation, Iran has executed drone and missile strikes against Israel and other regional nations housing US assets.
