Brussels: The Belgian government on Monday introduced stricter rules for foreign students seeking to study in the country or renew their student residence permits. According to Anadolu Agency, the new measures are aimed at preventing potential abuse of the system, requiring foreign students to demonstrate faster academic progress.

Under the revised regulations, students must earn at least 60 credits within their first two academic years and subsequently achieve at least 40 credits each year. Additionally, the maximum study durations for master’s degrees, advanced master’s programs, certificates, and doctoral studies will be more clearly defined.

The government is also taking steps to prevent students from extending their stay by frequently changing courses. Visa rules are being tightened for students attending non-recognized institutions, which include some unapproved arts schools and private business schools.
