Bezos Predicts AI Will Lead to Labor Shortages Rather Than Unemployment

Paris: US billionaire Jeff Bezos stated on Thursday that artificial intelligence (AI) will lead to labor shortages as opposed to reducing employment opportunities, countering widespread predictions of job displacement due to AI advancements.

According to Anadolu Agency, Bezos, the founder of Amazon, expressed his disagreement with the prevailing concerns that AI could replace human workers. Speaking at the VivaTech technology fair in Paris, he emphasized that AI will enable people to identify more problems, thereby creating a demand for labor. Bezos remarked, "I absolutely do not agree with that. I think artificial intelligence will create labor shortages because it will allow people to identify more problems."

Bezos elaborated on his perspective by highlighting the limitless potential for inventions, suggesting that the primary constraint is not imagination but the ability to execute ideas. He stated, "It is not our imagination that limits us, but what we are able to do." He further explained that many ideas remain unachieved due to their complexity in execution, but AI could expedite the process, making more ideas feasible.

Despite these optimistic views on AI, Bezos acknowledged recent job cuts at Amazon. Since late last year, the e-commerce giant has trimmed approximately 30,000 jobs while striving for dominance in the AI sector.

In addition to AI, Bezos addressed developments in the space industry. As the founder of Blue Origin, he argued that space exploration faces challenges not due to a lack of demand but due to limited supply. Bezos identified restricted access to space as a significant hurdle to future advancements, underscoring the importance of lunar exploration. "We will go to the moon not only to visit, but to stay," he asserted, underscoring the moon's potential role as a stepping stone for further space exploration initiatives.
