Kuala lumpur: A boat believed to be transporting nearly 100 undocumented migrants capsized near the maritime border between Malaysia and Thailand, resulting in six survivors being found, as reported by Bernama News on Sunday.

According to Anadolu Agency, Malaysia's Kedah police chief Adzli Abu Shah stated that the six rescued individuals included three Myanmar men, two Rohingya men, and one Bangladeshi man. Additionally, the body of a deceased Rohingya woman was found floating in the sea.

Shah explained that the group was traveling from Myanmar to Malaysia. Initially, they boarded a large vessel carrying 300 people. However, as they neared the border, they were instructed to transfer to three smaller boats, each accommodating approximately 100 people, to avoid detection by authorities.

"However, three days ago, the boat they were on capsized, and the incident is believed to have occurred in Thai waters before they drifted into Malaysian waters," the police chief stated to reporters on Sunday.

He also noted that the status of the other two boats remains unknown, and a search-and-rescue operation is ongoing.

The Rohingya, a predominantly Muslim minority in Myanmar, experience abuse, discrimination, and statelessness, leading many to flee from Myanmar. Myanmar has been embroiled in a civil war since the 2021 military coup, amid internal ethnic clashes.
