Brazil: Brazil has denounced the US decision to revoke the visa of its ambassador to Washington, rejecting the State Department's stated reasons as 'false.'
According to Anadolu Agency, the Brazilian Government issued a statement through the Secretariat of Social Communication of President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, expressing strong disapproval of the US Department of State's decision to alter the visa of Brazil's Ambassador in Washington. This move was described as a reciprocal response to Brazil's prior denial of visas to two US officials and the delay in approving Washington's nominee for ambassador.
The Brazilian statement refuted the justifications provided by the US, labeling them as false. It highlighted that the process of granting agrement, which is the host country's formal acceptance of a proposed ambassador, is confidential under the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations. Brazil accused the US of publicly announcing its nominee for ambassador before officially seeking Brazil's approval, emphasizing that international law does not impose a deadline for granting agrement. The US request, Brazil noted, is still under review.
Furthermore, Brazil defended its decision to deny visas to two US officials, claiming that their intentions were to question the integrity of Brazil's electoral system before the October 4 presidential election. The government criticized this intended visit as an 'unacceptable attempt to interfere in the country's domestic political process.'
The Brazilian government also expressed discontent over ongoing US sanctions against Brazilian officials, including Supreme Court justices and senior executive branch members. These sanctions were imposed over allegations that former President Jair Bolsonaro is being politically persecuted. During a visit to Washington in May, President Lula da Silva had requested US President Donald Trump to lift these sanctions, as mentioned in the statement.
In its concluding remarks, Brazil accused Washington of deliberately escalating tensions for ideological reasons and attempting to interfere in the presidential election. Despite these accusations, Brazil reiterated its opposition to confrontation and expressed its continued commitment to dialogue and negotiation.
