Istanbul: British adventurer Karl Bushby has reached Istanbul, marking a significant milestone in his ambitious journey to travel across continents solely on foot. Over the past 26 years, Bushby has traversed nearly 50,000 kilometers (31,065 miles), starting from Chile and aiming to illustrate the feasibility of intercontinental travel without motorized transportation.
According to Anadolu Agency, Bushby, now 56, embarked on this monumental expedition in 1998, aspiring to become the first individual to walk and swim across the Americas, Asia, and Europe. His journey, which has been chronicled in several documentaries, began in Chile and included the perilous crossing of the Darien Gap, a dense and challenging jungle between Colombia and Panama, which took nearly four years to navigate.
Bushby proceeded to cross the Panama Canal into North America, traversing through Mexico, the United States, and Canada before reaching Alaska. In a remarkable feat in 2006, he walked across the frozen Bering Strait to enter Russia. However, he encountered difficulties when Russian authorities detained him for nearly two months due to lacking proper travel documentation. Despite occasional issues necessitating brief flights, Bushby always resumed his walk precisely where he had paused.
Continuing his journey through Mongolia and Central Asia, Bushby reached the Caspian Sea, where he swam part of the way, occasionally resting on a small boat. He then made his way through Georgia and into Trkiye, arriving in Istanbul's Uskudar district, thus concluding the Asian leg of his expedition. Currently, he awaits permission to either walk over the bridge or swim across the Bosphorus to enter Europe. Bushby aims to cover an additional 3,000 kilometers to France before swimming across the English Channel to complete his journey back to the UK.
Bushby shared with Anadolu that his journey was driven by the challenge and the desire to accomplish what seemed impossible, rather than any philosophical purpose. He highlighted the Darien Gap and Russia as particularly challenging segments of his expedition, noting the dangers and political obstacles he faced.
Throughout his 26-year journey, Bushby persevered through war zones, visa bans, pandemics, and economic hardships. He recounted how the early years, especially in South America, were particularly difficult. However, as he reached the US border, public interest in his story grew, leading to small sponsorships that supported his endeavor.
Bushby expressed gratitude for the warm reception he received in Trkiye during his three-month journey through the country. He praised the Turkish people's hospitality, recalling how locals in the Uskudar district offered him food and tea without knowing who he was. Bushby expressed his hope to engage with local authorities to continue his journey into Europe, emphasizing his appreciation for the kindness shown by the Turkish people.
