Cambodia and Thailand Sign Peace Pact to Resolve Border Conflict

Kuala lumpur: Cambodia and Thailand signed a peace agreement in Kuala Lumpur on Sunday, aiming to settle their long-standing border dispute that escalated into deadly clashes in July. The signing ceremony was attended by US President Donald Trump, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet, and Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul.

According to Anadolu Agency, the accord was signed during the 47th ASEAN Summit and includes provisions for the release of 18 Cambodian prisoners of war. “Under this agreement, observers from ASEAN countries, including Malaysia, will be deployed to ensure that peace prevails and endures,” said Trump at the ceremony. The July clashes had displaced thousands, and a ceasefire brokered by Trump and Anwar had ended the fighting, with both countries working on de-escalation measures since.

Trump emphasized the importance of the agreement, citing the significant business ties the US has with both Cambodia and Thailand. “We have to use that business to make sure they don’t get into wars, but this is going to be a very long peace,” he stated. Cambodian Prime Minister Manet expressed gratitude to Trump, announcing that Cambodia had nominated him for the Nobel Peace Prize in August as a reflection of their appreciation. He also acknowledged China’s support in the truce efforts.

Manet reiterated Cambodia’s commitment to the peace agreement and highlighted ongoing discussions between military commanders on the possibility of a partial withdrawal as a gesture of goodwill. Thai Prime Minister Anutin echoed these sentiments, expressing a commitment to peaceful resolution and respect for sovereignty. Both nations are set to begin removing heavy weapons from their border areas to ensure civilian safety and foster trust.

Anwar Ibrahim commended all parties involved, particularly praising Trump’s commitment to the peace deal. He humorously recalled his time with Trump, drawing parallels between their experiences and emphasizing the importance of breaking norms to achieve peace. Anwar, who spent time in prison, shared a light-hearted moment with Trump about their pasts.

The Malaysian leader thanked the Cambodian and Thai prime ministers for their efforts, highlighting the importance of securing peace and maintaining ASEAN’s reputation as a region of peace and prosperity. Trump also briefly addressed tensions between Afghanistan and Pakistan, expressing confidence in reaching a quick agreement between the two countries.
