Phnom penh: Cambodia has arrested 10 more South Korean nationals in a crackdown on online scams, Seoul's Foreign Minister Cho Hyun announced. This development follows South Korea's recent repatriation of 64 nationals detained in Cambodia for alleged involvement in similar online scam activities.

According to Anadolu Agency, Cho Hyun disclosed at a news conference that Cambodian authorities apprehended approximately 10 South Koreans last Thursday due to suspected connections with online scams. Additionally, two South Korean nationals, considered to be victims in this situation, were rescued on the same day. Plans are underway for their repatriation this week, as reported by Seoul-based Yonhap News.

The South Korean Foreign Ministry has initiated a comprehensive inspection of its citizens involved in global online scams. To tackle these incidents more effectively, the ministry intends to recruit 40 additional consular personnel. Cho emphasized the importance of collaborating closely with Cambodian authorities to address this issue, expressing confidence in resolving the situation through joint efforts.

The crackdown comes amid heightened public concern following reports of a South Korean college student being tortured and killed in August by an online scam criminal group in Cambodia. In response to these incidents, South Korea has intensified its diplomatic initiatives and investigations, including operations aimed at locating and rescuing its citizens from such criminal organizations.
