Cambodia: Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet on Thursday called for "immediate intervention" from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), led by current chair Malaysia, due to escalating tensions at the Cambodian-Thai border.

According to Anadolu Agency, Hun Manet made this request through US social media company X after discussing the situation with Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim. He urged Malaysia to help de-escalate the conflict between Thai armed forces and Cambodian civilians by maintaining the status quo. The situation has raised concerns after Cambodian citizens and Thai officials were injured in a clash over border fencing.

Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul stated on Thursday that the Thai army currently has the authority to make decisions regarding the Thai-Cambodian border conflict. This comes after a ceasefire was established on July 28, following an escalation that led to casualties on both sides.

The two countries agreed on a 13-point plan on August 7, which included allowing ASEAN observers to monitor the ceasefire along the disputed border. The recent developments have put pressure on ASEAN to mediate and ensure that the agreement is upheld.
