Canada and Trkiye Elevate Relations to Strategic Partnership Level

Ankara:Relations between Canada and Trkiye are set to expand significantly as the two nations have decided to elevate their ties to a strategic partnership. This announcement was made by Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney during a joint news conference with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

According to Anadolu Agency – English, Carney emphasized the potential for long-term growth in the relationship between the two countries, stating that this strategic partnership is aimed at collective resilience rather than self-sufficiency. He highlighted Trkiye's significant role within NATO and its innovative defense industry as key factors in the partnership.

Carney also discussed Trkiye's influential role in regional security and international diplomacy, particularly in resolving conflicts in Gaza, Ukraine, and Iran. He expressed optimism about the future growth of the partnership, quoting the founding motto of the Turkish Republic to emphasize the commitment to peace.

On the economic front, Carney and Erdogan discussed plans to increase bilateral trade, which has grown by 50% over the past five years. They aim to boost the trade volume from the current $3 billion to $5 billion initially, and eventually to $10 billion. The two nations will initiate free trade talks next month to address market barriers.

Furthermore, Export Development Canada and Turk Eximbank are set to sign an agreement to finance joint ventures in infrastructure, energy, mining, and transport in third countries. Three bilateral agreements were signed during the visit, including a memorandum of understanding on defense partnerships, an air transport agreement, and an energy cooperation declaration.

Carney's visit to Ankara, marking the first bilateral visit to Trkiye by a Canadian Prime Minister, included an official ceremony at the Presidential Complex. The trip is aimed at strengthening ties and exploring new economic opportunities for both countries.
