Jeddah: Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on Thursday underscored the roles of Saudi Arabia and Trkiye as pivotal in developing potential solutions for the Middle East. During a news conference in Jeddah, Carney defended his government's strategy of direct engagement with Riyadh, distancing from the previous administration's approach of public criticism.
According to Anadolu Agency, Carney emphasized the necessity for direct dialogue with influential regional powers, stating that Canada is deeply invested in the Middle East's stability. He articulated the importance of working collaboratively with countries like Saudi Arabia and Trkiye, while acknowledging that engagement does not equate to agreement with all their policies.
Carney addressed questions regarding his government's avoidance of public rebuke toward Saudi Arabia, explaining that discreet engagement is more productive than criticism from afar. He acknowledged that while public lecturing may be satisfying, it is often ineffective, whereas engagement can yield positive outcomes, although not guaranteed.
The prime minister reaffirmed Canada's commitment to human rights, self-determination, and territorial integrity, highlighting discussions with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan as a testament to the effectiveness of direct dialogue. He noted that such interactions resulted in favorable outcomes that would have been unattainable through long-distance criticism.
Carney also mentioned Canada's efforts to diversify its international partnerships, pointing out an overreliance on the United States. He stressed the need for Canada to expand its global connections to avoid dependence on a single partner, a sentiment he believes resonates strongly with Canadians.
