Ankara: In the latest wave of violence, Israeli military actions in Gaza have resulted in the deaths of 53 Palestinians, including children and a pregnant woman, amidst escalating tensions in the region. The attacks have left numerous others injured, with several in critical condition, illustrating the dire humanitarian situation unfolding in Gaza.
According to Anadolu Agency, the most recent incident involved an Israeli strike near the Zikim area, northwest of Beit Lahia, where five Palestinians lost their lives, and 58 others were injured as they awaited aid. The attack has further compounded the suffering of displaced Palestinians in the region.
In a separate incident, an Israeli strike targeted a tent sheltering displaced individuals in the Al-Mawasi area, west of Khan Younis, resulting in one fatality and more than ten injuries. Meanwhile, in central Gaza's Nuseirat refugee camp, eight Palestinians were killed, and others were injured following an Israeli assault.
Tragedy also struck in the central town of Al-Zawaida, where an Israeli drone strike claimed the life of one Palestinian. The violence extended to Gaza City, where a residential apartment in the Tel al-Hawa neighborhood was hit overnight. As reported by the official Palestinian news agency WAFA, this attack killed seven people, including children, a pregnant woman, and her unborn child.
Israeli forces also reportedly targeted an ambulance near Hamad Rehabilitation Hospital, injuring medical team members, according to WAFA, citing medical sources. Additionally, a strike on a tent sheltering displaced families at the Al-Shati refugee camp resulted in the death of one girl and injuries to 11 others, mostly children, who were subsequently taken to Al-Shifa Hospital.
Further casualties were reported in the Al-Tuffah, Al-Daraj, and Zeitoun neighborhoods of Gaza City, where six individuals were killed in Israeli strikes, as stated by medical sources. In Deir al-Balah, medics retrieved the bodies of 12 people after Israeli forces withdrew, and another individual succumbed to injuries from a previous drone strike.
In another devastating blow, an Israeli fighter jet attack in the Nuseirat refugee camp left one civilian dead, while al-Awda Hospital received the bodies of four civilians killed near aid distribution sites in Wadi Gaza. In southern Gaza, a strike on Bani Suheila, east of Khan Younis, resulted in four deaths and several injuries, as reported by a medical source.
The situation further deteriorated in Rafah, where Israeli forces shelled Palestinians seeking humanitarian aid, killing two and injuring 40 others. Since October 2023, Israel's military campaign has claimed the lives of over 59,200 Palestinians, primarily women and children, causing widespread devastation, a collapsed health system, and severe food shortages in the Gaza Strip.
The international community's attention has been drawn to the crisis, with the International Criminal Court issuing arrest warrants last November for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity. Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice concerning its actions in Gaza.
