Santiago:Chilean authorities have declared a yellow alert in the Santiago Metropolitan Region in response to intense rainfall, flooding, and the activation of ravines, as reported by the National Service for Disaster Prevention and Response (SENAPRED).
According to Anadolu Agency, this alert allows for the progressive deployment of additional resources aimed at preventing the escalation of emergencies and minimizing risks to people, property, and the environment.
The alert follows significant rainfall across several municipalities, leading to flooded streets and underpasses. A landslide has been reported in Melipilla, located southwest of Santiago, and ravines have been activated in San Jose de Maipo, southeast of the capital, according to Chilean local media outlet BioBioChile. Emergency teams have been dispatched to various locations to manage the incidents and monitor the weather situation.
The alert will remain in place until weather conditions improve. Chile's Meteorological Directorate has issued warnings for moderate to heavy rainfall in the coastal mountain range, valley, and foothill areas of the region, with forecasts of thunderstorms, hail, and strong winds in these areas.
Furthermore, the National Geology and Mining Service, SERNAGEOMIN, has highlighted a high probability of debris flows and landslides in the coastal mountain range, valley, and foothill areas, while the risk is lower in the higher mountain range.
SENAPRED has escalated the alert from a previous Preventive Early Warning to Yellow in coordination with the Metropolitan Regional Presidential Delegation. This measure aims to prevent the situation from worsening and to mitigate its impact.
Authorities are urging residents to stay informed through official channels and adhere to the instructions provided by emergency services as they continue to monitor the evolving weather conditions.
