Beijing: China on Monday emphasized that its economic ties with Canada are not intended to target any third party, asserting that these relations contribute to world peace. This statement followed the United States' threat to impose 100% tariffs on Canadian goods if Ottawa enters into a trade agreement with Beijing.

According to Anadolu Agency, Beijing's Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun addressed reporters in the Chinese capital, advocating for a collaborative approach to international relations. He stated that countries should engage in state-to-state interactions with a win-win mentality, focusing on cooperation rather than confrontation.

The situation escalated when US President Donald Trump announced on his social media platform, Truth Social, that any trade deal between Canada and China would result in a 100% tariff on Canadian goods entering the United States. In response, Guo highlighted the establishment of a new strategic partnership between China and Canada, which involves specific arrangements to handle economic and trade issues.

Guo underscored that these developments reflect principles of equality, openness, inclusiveness, and mutual benefit. The recent official visit of Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney to China was hailed by Chinese President Xi Jinping as a 'turning point' in the bilateral relationship.

Carney noted that Canada's relationship with China had become more predictable compared to its dealings with the US under Trump's administration. The trade relations between Canada and China date back to 1970, with the bilateral trade volume reaching $67 billion by the end of 2024.
