China Criticizes US Veto Power on Israeli-Gaza Conflict at UN

New york: China has strongly criticized the "abuse" of veto power by the United States at the United Nations Security Council, which has impeded efforts to halt what it describes as an Israeli "genocide" in Gaza. Ambassador Fu Cong, China's leading diplomat at the UN, addressed the ongoing 80th session of the General Assembly, emphasizing that without the US's repeated use of its veto, the Security Council's response to the Gaza crisis would have been more effective.

According to Anadolu Agency, Fu remarked on the situation, highlighting the US's role as one of the five permanent members of the Security Council with veto capabilities, which include the ability to block decisions made by the UN's top executive body. He stated that the US's protection of Israel has led to violations of Council resolutions and international law.

Fu referred to the Security Council's draft resolution on Gaza from September 18, which the US vetoed. He pointed out that the international community has consistently called for a ceasefire and an end to hostilities. The Security Council has attempted to take action multiple times, only to be blocked by the United States, causing China to express deep disappointment and regret.

Since October 7, 2023, when Israel launched its war on Gaza, the US has provided diplomatic support to Israel. This conflict has resulted in the deaths of over 66,000 Palestinians, most of whom are women and children, and has made the region uninhabitable, leading to famine. Efforts towards a ceasefire and lasting peace continue, with a 20-point plan proposed by US President Donald Trump earlier this week.

Fu stressed the severe humanitarian impact of the nearly two-year conflict in Gaza, citing the significant civilian casualties and humanitarian crisis that challenge human conscience and international law. He emphasized the urgent need for a lasting ceasefire and advocated for the implementation of a two-state solution as the only viable path to resolving the Israel-Palestine conflict. Fu reiterated the importance of respecting Palestinian governance and the will of the Palestinian people in any post-war governance and reconstruction efforts.
