Beijing: China on Wednesday criticized the United States for its blockade of Cuba, describing it as "barbarian" and calling for an end to the sanctions imposed on Havana. 'We urge the US to lift the blockade and sanctions,' Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning stated during a news conference in Beijing. She emphasized the need for Washington to retract its classification of Cuba as a 'State Sponsor of Terrorism.'

According to Anadolu Agency, the Chinese official condemned the actions of the US, noting that the blockade and sanctions over the past 60 years have severely hindered Cuba's right to subsistence and development. The actions were also described as a violation of international relations principles, causing significant harm to the Cuban populace.

The comments from China followed a move by US President Donald Trump, who signed a memorandum on Monday aimed at intensifying economic pressure and restrictions on Cuba. This action was criticized by Havana, accusing the US of penalizing the entire Cuban population.

Mao Ning expressed China's support for Cuba in pursuing a development path suited to its national conditions, opposing what she described as the US's misuse of unilateral sanctions under the guise of promoting freedom and democracy. Trump's decision to sign the memorandum adds to a series of actions against the Cuban government, including the reinstatement of Cuba as a 'State Sponsor of Terrorism' and efforts to counteract the Biden administration's initiatives to mend ties with Havana.
