Beijing: The European Union and China have pledged to accelerate the global deployment of renewable energy and affirmed their commitment to the Paris Agreement on climate change. This declaration follows the EU-China summit held in Beijing on Thursday.

According to Anadolu Agency, the EU and China released a joint statement post-summit, highlighting their "commitment" to promoting renewable energy worldwide and improving access to high-quality green technologies and products. Both parties emphasized the importance of maintaining the "central role" of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the Paris Agreement, while committing to "fully" and "faithfully" implement their objectives and principles.

The statement underscored the necessity for all countries, particularly major economies, to maintain policy continuity and stability amidst the current "fluid and turbulent international situation," and to intensify efforts in combating climate change. The EU and China also agreed to enhance collaboration in various sectors, including energy transition, adaptation, methane emissions management, carbon markets, and the development of green and low-carbon technologies.

The joint statement further highlighted the importance of strengthening China-EU cooperation on climate change, noting its significance to the well-being of people on both sides and its crucial role in supporting multilateralism and advancing global climate governance.

The Paris Agreement, established in 2015, aims to unite countries worldwide in reducing greenhouse gas emissions to limit global warming. The United States had previously exited the agreement under President Donald Trump, citing undue burdens on the American economy while accusing China of polluting without constraints. The US rejoined the accord under President Joe Biden's administration in 2021.
