China: China has launched a new satellite-based short messaging service utilizing the BeiDou Navigation Satellite System (BDS) to ensure communication during emergencies when mobile networks are unavailable, as reported by state media on Friday.

According to Anadolu Agency, the service was launched by China Space-Time Information Co. in collaboration with the country's leading telecommunications operators. It aims to enhance connectivity in remote areas, at sea, and during disaster response operations, as reported by Xinhua News Agency.

"It marks a significant step toward bringing satellite communication technology to the public," the company stated. They further explained that it integrates BeiDou's capabilities into everyday life, providing concrete technological protection.

The new service enables compatible smartphones to send and receive text messages directly via BeiDou satellites, bypassing conventional cellular networks. China Mobile, China Telecom, and China Unicom have integrated the service into their networks, allowing users to access it without needing to change SIM cards or phone numbers, according to the company.

Currently, around 60 smartphone models from major Chinese brands support this feature. China Space-Time Information is specialized in satellite navigation and communications, big data, artificial intelligence, and geospatial remote sensing.
