Beijing: China on Tuesday "firmly" opposed the US using "religion and human rights" to interfere in Nigeria after Washington threatened possible military action against the West African country for the alleged "killing of Christians."

According to Anadolu Agency, Beijing "firmly opposes any country using religion and human rights as an excuse to interfere in other countries' internal affairs and threatening other countries with sanctions and force," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning stated during a news conference in Beijing. She emphasized China's stance against external intervention, asserting the importance of respecting national sovereignty.

Mao Ning further reiterated China's support for Nigeria, stating, "As Nigeria's comprehensive strategic partner, China firmly supports the Nigerian government in leading its people" on a path of development that aligns with its national conditions. This statement highlights China's commitment to maintaining its strategic partnership with Nigeria and respecting its internal governance.

The remarks from China come in response to US President Donald Trump's recent threats of possible military action against Nigeria. Trump accused "radical Islamists" of being responsible for what he described as the "mass slaughter" of Christians, claiming that Christianity is facing an "existential threat" in Nigeria. The US's stance has raised concerns internationally about the implications of military intervention under the pretext of human rights and religious freedom.
