China Reiterates Opposition to US Arms Sales Following Taiwan F-16V Jet Delivery

Taitung:China has reiterated its opposition to US arms sales to Taiwan after Taipei received the first two of 66 F-16V Block 70 fighter jets from the United States.

According to Anadolu Agency, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun emphasized China's firm stance against the arms sales, stating that the issue of Taiwan is an internal affair of China. He urged the United States to adhere to the one-China principle and the three China-US joint communiques, urging caution regarding the Taiwan issue. This follows US officials' assessments that the probability of a Chinese invasion of Taiwan before 2028 is decreasing.

The two fighter jets arrived at Chihhang Air Base in eastern Taitung, Taiwan, after departing from Hawaii and stopping in Guam. This delivery is part of a sale approved by the US in 2019, valued at approximately $8 billion.

In another development, Guo Jiakun commented on the arrest of a California woman by the FBI, who was accused of spying on the son of Taiwan's leader, William Lai Ching-te, on behalf of Chinese officials. Guo stated that he was not familiar with the specifics of the case but expressed China's opposition to the characterization of such incidents as part of a "Chinese spy" narrative.

The woman, Wanying Zhang, also known as 'Heather,' was apprehended by the FBI's Los Angeles field office. She faces charges of acting as an unregistered agent of China and was detained at Los Angeles International Airport while attempting to leave for China.
