New York: Rejecting US accusations of complicity in the Ukraine war, China has claimed its alleged support to Moscow over Kyiv would have resulted in a different situation on the battlefield. "If China had really provided military supplies to Russia, the situation on the battleground would not have been where it is now," Ambassador Geng Shuang told the UN Security Council during a briefing over Ukraine.

According to Anadolu Agency, the Chinese diplomat was responding to a 'false narrative' by Washington to 'discredit and smear' China over the Russia-Ukraine war, based on a transcript of Geng's statement at the council. Geng emphasized that if China had provided political cover for Russia, it would not have publicly stressed the importance of respecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all countries, or adhered to the purposes and principles of the UN Charter.

He further stated that if China were not interested in an early resolution to the conflict, it would not have engaged in diplomatic efforts or collaborated with Global South countries to establish the Group of Friends for Peace on the Ukraine Crisis. This war, which has caused significant casualties and displaced millions, is approaching its third anniversary.

While Beijing has refrained from condemning Russia for its actions, described by Moscow as a 'special military operation' since February 2022, it has consistently advocated for the respect of sovereignty and territorial integrity. Last year, in partnership with Brazil, China launched the Group of Friends for Peace on the Ukraine Crisis, involving several other nations.

Geng concluded by asserting that the US has used the Ukraine conflict to further its geopolitical strategy and agenda, aiming to weaken Russia and increase its influence in Europe.
