China Responds to Trump’s Comments on Potential TikTok Acquisition

Beijing: China on Monday reiterated its stance concerning TikTok following comments by US President Donald Trump about a potential purchase by a "group of wealthy people," which would require Chinese government approval.

According to Anadolu Agency, Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning stated during a live-streamed news conference in Beijing that China is maintaining its position and has "nothing to add" on the matter. The comments come amid ongoing discussions about the future of the popular social media platform in the United States.

China has previously acknowledged the beneficial impact of TikTok in promoting employment and consumer activity in the US. In January, Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun emphasized that business operations and acquisitions should be guided by market principles. He also noted that any involvement of Chinese companies in such transactions must adhere to Chinese laws and regulations.

During an interview with Fox News, President Trump mentioned that there is a buyer for TikTok, hinting that Chinese President Xi Jinping's approval might be necessary for the deal to proceed. Trump did not provide details on the potential buyers, referring to them only as "very, very wealthy people" and did not clarify if a major technology company was involved. He suggested that more details would be unveiled in approximately two weeks.

Speculation about potential buyers has included Elon Musk, though the billionaire has denied any interest in purchasing the platform.
