China Sanctions Former Philippines Senator Over Beijing-Related Issues

China: China has imposed sanctions on a former Philippines senator for his "egregious conduct" on Chinese-related issues, a Foreign Ministry spokesperson said on Tuesday. The ban will prohibit Francis Tolentino from entering the Chinese mainland as well as Hong Kong and Macao.

According to Anadolu Agency, the spokesperson noted that for quite some time, a small group of anti-China politicians in the Philippines, driven by selfish interests, have made malicious remarks and actions regarding issues related to China, which are considered detrimental to China's interests and the relationship between China and the Philippines.

The spokesperson emphasized that China is "firmly" resolved to defend its national sovereignty, security, and development interests. The announcement comes amidst several ongoing disputes between China and the Philippines, particularly concerning territorial claims in the South China Sea.

Tolentino, 65, served as a senator from 2019 to 2025, and his actions have now led to this significant diplomatic move by China.
