Ankara: The Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC) on Thursday summoned US chip giant Nvidia to clarify the "backdoor security risks" associated with its H20 computing chips.

According to Anadolu Agency, the CAC reported that serious security issues involving Nvidia's computing chips have come to light. Previously, US lawmakers had advocated for advanced chips exported from the US to be equipped with tracking and location capabilities.

The CAC further explained that US artificial intelligence experts disclosed that Nvidia's computing chips possess developed tracking, location, and remote shutdown technologies. To ensure the network and data security of Chinese users, the CAC, in line with the Cybersecurity Law, the Data Security Law, and the Personal Information Protection Law, summoned Nvidia on July 31, 2025. The company was requested to explain the backdoor security risks related to its H20 computing chips sold in China and to submit relevant supporting documentation.

In April, Washington had restricted Nvidia from selling its H20 chips to China, marking an escalation in the tech war with Beijing. The restriction required Nvidia to obtain an export license indefinitely to continue selling the chips to China.

Nvidia has indicated that it expects to incur charges of up to $5.5 billion in its fiscal first quarter due to these US export requirements now affecting its H20 chip sales to the Chinese market.

Earlier this month, Nvidia announced plans to resume sales of its H20 AI chips to China following a pledge by the US government to remove the licensing restrictions.
