Beijing: Beijing on Tuesday called upon Japan's newly appointed Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi to adhere to Tokyo's political commitments regarding Taiwan, emphasizing the importance of Japan's cooperation with China. The statement was issued following Takaichi's historic election as Japan's first female prime minister, having secured victory in both chambers of the Japanese parliament.

According to Anadolu Agency, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun acknowledged Japan's internal electoral outcomes, emphasizing that the relationship between China and Japan is based on mutual proximity and clear diplomatic stances. Guo expressed China's hope for Japan to align with China's vision, stressing the need for Tokyo to respect historical political commitments related to Taiwan, which China regards as its province. He urged the new Japanese government to maintain the political foundation of bilateral relations and to further the strategic relationship of mutual benefit between the two nations.

The election of Takaichi occurred during the 219th extraordinary session of Japan's parliament, known locally as the Diet. Takaichi is expected to make her international debut as Prime Minister at a summit of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations in Malaysia later this week.

South Korean President Lee Jae Myung extended congratulations to Takaichi on her election, as reported by Yonhap News. President Lee expressed his desire to strengthen mutually beneficial cooperation between South Korea and Japan, highlighting the importance of continued dialogue and communication between the two nations' leaders. South Korea's Foreign Ministry echoed this sentiment, expressing optimism about maintaining positive momentum in bilateral relations and emphasizing the importance of collaboration amidst shifting geopolitical and trade dynamics.

In addition to South Korea, leaders from India and Malaysia offered their congratulations to Takaichi. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his best wishes via social media platform X, while Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim acknowledged the significance of Takaichi's election as a milestone in Japan's political landscape. Taiwan's William Lai Ching-te also congratulated Takaichi, recognizing the shared values and partnership between Taiwan and Japan.
