Beijing: China on Thursday declared that the case of Hong Kong media tycoon Jimmy Lai is strictly an internal affair and cautioned against any external interference. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning emphasized that Lai was the "principal mastermind and perpetrator behind the series of riots that shook Hong Kong."

According to Anadolu Agency, Mao Ning stated at a news conference that the central government fully supports Hong Kong's judicial authorities in executing their duties according to the law. She reiterated that Hong Kong's affairs are China's internal matters and should remain free from external intervention.

Mao's comments came in light of reports suggesting that US President Donald Trump raised concerns about Lai's situation during his recent discussion with Chinese President Xi Jinping in South Korea. Prior to their meeting, Trump had indicated the possibility of asking President Xi to consider Lai's release.

China considers Lai a "major mastermind and participant of the anti-China riots in Hong Kong in 2019." The media mogul, who founded the now-defunct Apple Daily, is facing charges under Beijing-enforced security legislation for 'conspiracy to collude with foreign forces' and for allegedly publishing 'seditious' materials.

Jimmy Lai's trial commenced on December 18, 2023, and if convicted, he could face life imprisonment. He has pleaded not guilty to charges of colluding with foreign forces and the sedition charge.
