China’s Foreign Minister Urges Support for UN Amid Mideast Conflicts

Beijing: China's Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Wednesday sought support for the UN amid the ongoing armed conflicts in the Middle East. Wang made the remarks during a meeting with Annalena Baerbock, president of the 80th session of the UN General Assembly, according to a readout by the Chinese Foreign Ministry.

According to Anadolu Agency, Wang emphasized the necessity of supporting, reinvigorating, and strengthening the United Nations amid the prevailing turbulence and escalating hotspot issues. He addressed Baerbock, the former foreign minister of Germany, expressing the hope that she will unite the majority of UN member states, uphold sovereign equality, defend the rule of international law, promote dialogue and consultation, and consolidate the foundation of multilateralism. Wang assured that China is willing to continue supporting her in fulfilling her duties.

The meeting took place in Beijing against the backdrop of a ceasefire in the US-Israeli war with Iran, in effect since April 8. Despite the ceasefires in Gaza and Lebanon, Israel continues its attacks almost every day. Wang remarked on the increased turmoil in the world, with escalating hotspots and certain countries adopting a power-first approach, openly challenging the UN's status and role. He noted that the UN and multilateralism face severe challenges.

Wang further stated that in the face of these challenges, unity and cooperation must be upheld, preventing the dominance of the law of the jungle. He emphasized the importance of safeguarding fairness and justice against hegemonic bullying, ensuring that strength does not dictate terms. Wang also highlighted Beijing's long-term perspective, fulfilling its responsibility of maintaining world peace and security, defending the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, and making enduring Chinese contributions.

He also reiterated that UN General Assembly Resolution 2758 completely resolved the issue of representation for all of China, including Taiwan, in the UN, a resolution universally observed by the UN system. China appreciates this and opposes any words or actions challenging the resolution's authority.
