Beijing: Chinese President Xi Jinping has called for self-reliance in science and technology, emphasizing the need for efforts to overcome 'prominent weaknesses.' Xi made these remarks during a visit to a national information technology innovation park in Beijing.
According to Anadolu Agency, Xi highlighted the significance of 'self-reliance and strength' in science and technology as a fundamental component for building China into a 'great modern socialist country.' He urged the concentration of resources to achieve breakthroughs and accelerate the resolution of critical weaknesses to meet the country's strategic objectives.
During his visit, Xi engaged with IT applications, innovation, and was informed about Beijing's initiatives to expedite the development of an international science and technology innovation center. He observed displays showcasing achievements in sci-tech innovation and interacted with researchers and executives from science and technology enterprises.
Xi's statements coincide with an increasing trend of scientists and academics relocating to China from Western nations. Reports indicate that at least seven scientists, including mathematicians and engineers from the United States, Canada, and Finland, moved to China in 2025, as reported by the South China Morning Post.
In April 2025, Xi visited the Shanghai Foundation Model Innovation Center, China's first incubator focused on large-scale artificial intelligence models, where he encouraged Shanghai to assume a leading role in AI development.
