Gilgit-baltistan: A Chinese mountaineer has died after being struck by falling rocks while descending K2, the world's second-highest peak, in northern Pakistan. The country's official mountaineering association made the announcement on Wednesday.

According to Anadolu Agency, Guan Jing lost her life on Tuesday night as she descended from the summit of the 8,611-meter (26,246-foot) K2, located in the scenic Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) region bordering China. The Alpine Club of Pakistan provided a statement indicating her death is the third fatal mountaineering accident in the region within a month.

Earlier incidents include the death of German mountaineer and Olympic gold medalist Laura Dahlmeier, who perished while attempting Laila Peak on July 30. In another tragic event, Pakistani climber Iftikhar Hussain was killed and three others, including foreign climbers, were injured by an avalanche on K2 on July 19.

The recent accident took place on the Abruzzi Spur route, notorious for rockfalls, between Camp I and Advanced Base Camp. Guan had successfully reached the summit on Monday with a group of climbers before beginning her descent. Rescuers are currently working to recover her body, and other climbers who summited K2 that day are safely returning to base camp.

On Monday, more than 30 climbers reached the top of K2, a peak renowned for its perilous conditions and extreme weather, making it one of the most dangerous in the world.
