Beijing: Implementing the two-state solution, which includes establishing an independent Palestinian state with full sovereignty based on the 1967 borders and East Jerusalem as its capital, is “fundamental” for peace in Palestine, stated Chinese President Xi Jinping. Xi emphasized the urgency of ending the war and reducing regional tensions by fully implementing relevant UN Security Council resolutions, as highlighted in a statement by the Chinese State Council on Wednesday.
According to Anadolu Agency, the Chinese leader reaffirmed China’s support for the Palestinian people’s “legitimate” rights, including their right to statehood, existence, and return. He also advocated for Palestine’s full UN membership and the organization of an inclusive and effective international peace conference.
Beijing has expressed its ongoing commitment to collaborating with the international community to cease the war, provide humanitarian assistance to Gaza through the UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA), and advance
efforts towards a “comprehensive, just, and lasting” resolution based on the two-state framework.
The backdrop to Xi’s statements is the continued Israeli offensive in Gaza, which has persisted since the October 7, 2023, attack by Hamas, a Palestinian resistance group. The Israeli actions have resulted in the deaths of more than 44,200 people, predominantly women and children. The offensive has led to the displacement of nearly the entire population of Gaza, with a blockade causing severe shortages of food, clean water, and medicine, pushing the population to the brink of starvation.
Furthermore, Israel is currently facing a genocide case at the International Court of Justice concerning its brutal campaign in Gaza.
