Ankara: Colombian President Gustavo Petro has announced that his country may propose a resolution to the United Nations to stop US airstrikes targeting alleged drug trafficking vessels in the Caribbean. In a statement made on the US social media platform X, Petro criticized the legality of these operations and raised concerns about the opinions of Caribbean governments and their citizens.

According to Anadolu Agency, President Petro emphasized the necessity for Colombia to advocate for the cessation of what he described as aggression against the Caribbean by submitting a formal proposal to the United Nations. The US military has conducted at least 14 airstrikes since September, primarily in the Caribbean Sea and Pacific Ocean, resulting in over 61 fatalities.

Legal experts and human rights organizations have expressed concerns regarding the legitimacy of these US operations, contending that the airstrikes on suspected drug trafficking boats breach international law. The UN human rights chief, Volker Turk, has labeled the attacks as 'unacceptable' and called for an independent investigation, describing the incidents as extrajudicial killings.
