Bogota: Former Colombian President Gustavo Petro expressed strong opposition on Sunday to establishing diplomatic relations with Israel while Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is in power, asserting that it equates to endorsing the violence occurring in Gaza.

According to Anadolu Agency, Petro highlighted in a video message the high number of casualties in Gaza, pointing out that many of the victims are women and infants. He argued that forming ties with Israel under the current government is akin to supporting what he termed as genocide, mentioning the death of 22,000 babies as a significant concern.

Petro reflected on Colombia's own historical experiences with "genocide" and emphasized the importance of preventing similar events globally. He stressed the need for full sovereignty for both Israel and Palestine as a solution to ongoing conflicts.

Colombia had previously severed diplomatic relations with Israel on May 3, 2024, in response to the latter's military actions in Gaza. Later, on May 23, 2024, Petro directed the opening of a Colombian Embassy in Ramallah as a sign of solidarity with the Palestinian people.

In a subsequent statement on July 21, Petro criticized Colombian President Abelardo de la Espriella's commitment to restoring diplomatic ties with Israel, calling it "an insult to national honor."
