Brussels: The European Commission stated Thursday that any concrete steps toward the annexation of the occupied West Bank would constitute a violation of international law. This announcement followed the Israeli Knesset's adoption of a resolution urging the government to advance annexation plans.

According to Anadolu Agency, spokesperson Anouar El Anouni emphasized that the EU does not recognize Israeli sovereignty over Palestinian territories occupied since 1967, in line with UN Security Council resolutions. "Annexation is illegal under international law. Any concrete steps taken in that direction would be considered a breach of international law," El Anouni declared at a news conference in Brussels.

El Anouni reiterated the EU's commitment to a lasting peace based on a two-state solution, stressing that there is no alternative to this approach. Turning attention to the Gaza Strip, he highlighted the prolonged suffering of civilians and urged an end to their hardship.

He reported that the EU had circulated an internal update to member states regarding Israel's adherence to a July 10 agreement aimed at improving conditions in Gaza. El Anouni noted mixed feedback on Israel's commitment to enhancing humanitarian access, acknowledging increased truck entries into Gaza but pointing out ongoing distribution challenges.

El Anouni mentioned improvements, such as new crossings and routes and better fuel supply, but acknowledged that "the situation remains dire" and "much more needs to be done." Regarding the EU's representation at an upcoming UN conference in New York focused on a two-state solution, further details are to be provided in due course.

The EU also reaffirmed its support for the Global Alliance initiative to implement a two-state solution, aligning with broader international efforts to address the long-standing Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
