Cuba to Present UN Resolution Seeking End to US Embargo

Havana:Cuba is set to present a resolution to the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday and Wednesday, demanding an end to the decades-long US economic embargo. This announcement was made by Cuban radio station Radio Angulo on Monday.

According to Anadolu Agency – English, the resolution will mark the 34th time since 1992 that Havana has brought this issue before the UN General Assembly. Cuban UN Ambassador Ernesto Soberon accused the United States of exerting pressure on countries to influence their votes, with the US State Department and American embassies working to weaken support for the Cuban resolution.

The resolution, titled "Necessity of Ending the Economic, Commercial and Financial Blockade Imposed by the United States of America against Cuba," aims to remove US-imposed restrictions on the island. However, it is a nonbinding resolution, meaning the UN General Assembly cannot force the United States to lift the embargo, which has been in place for over six decades since its formal establishment in February 1962 under President John F. Kennedy.

Last year's UN General Assembly session saw the resolution receive 165 votes in favor, seven against, and 12 abstentions. The ongoing vote occurs amid a severe economic crisis in Cuba, characterized by fuel shortages, power outages, and difficulties accessing essential goods. Ambassador Soberon highlighted the increased US pressure on Cuba, including energy restrictions and sanctions on third countries, as exacerbating the nation's challenges.
