Mayotte: The French Indian Ocean archipelago of Mayotte is once again facing the threat of severe weather as it goes on red alert for the approaching Cyclone Dikeledi. This comes just weeks after the territory was battered by Cyclone Chido, which left a trail of destruction in its wake.
According to Anadolu Agency, Mayotte is still in the process of recovering from the devastation caused by Cyclone Chido, which struck with winds exceeding 220 km per hour, resulting in 39 fatalities and over 4,000 injuries. In light of the new threat posed by Cyclone Dikeledi, authorities have urged residents to exercise caution and remain indoors.
In preparation for the cyclone, approximately 15,000 people have taken shelter in 79 emergency centers set up across the islands. Additional accommodations have been arranged for those unable to find a safe refuge, with officials advising residents to bring their own water and food supplies.
The local prefect has indicated that Cyclone Dikeledi is expected to weaken as it moves approximately 100 kilometers south of Mayotte. However, the ongoing climate crisis continues to leave Mayotte increasingly vulnerable to such extreme weather events, underscoring the urgency for residents to take necessary precautions.
