Cypriot MP addresses IPU conference in Armenia

Cypriot MP Demetris Demetriou participates in the 10th Global Conference of Young Parliamentarians, that is organised by the Interparliamentary Union and the Parliament of Armenia.

The theme of the Conference, that began on Thursday, is ‘Avoiding lost generations: Safeguarding education and employment in all circumstances’ and focuses on solutions to ensure uninterrupted access to education and create job opportunities for young people.

In his intervention on the subject “Progress towards the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals in the fields of education and youth employment”, Cypriot MP Demetris Demetriou pointed out that Cyprus puts emphasis on the diversification of the economy, especially in the areas of digital services, green energy and sustainable tourism, as it is estimated that these sectors can create new jobs for the youth.

He referred to the education sector in Cyprus and the important steps that have been taken in the areas of digital literacy and access to online education, the
importance of which has been highlighted by the pandemic, as he pointed out.

As we approach 2030, he said, it is important to ensure that every young person, from the urban centers of Europe to the rural communities of the Caucasus, has the digital skills and access they need to succeed.

He also referred to youth unemployment and underemployment, pointing out that despite the improvement in quality in education, they remain a common concern and challenge for governments.

The Cypriot MP stressed the importance of promoting an environment that encourages entrepreneurship and innovation in order to tackle youth unemployment.
