Cyprus' Deputy Communications Commissioner, and president of the European Mediterranean Regulators Group (EMERG), Petros Galides, held 'important contacts' and achieved specific positive results, such as the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the EMERG and the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), according to an announcement by the Office of the Communications Commissioner.
It noted that Galides participated in the ITU's Global Symposium for Regulators (GSR-23) which was held in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt from June 5 to 8, 2023.
It adds that, in the context of GSR-23, Galides, in his capacity as President of EMERG, together with the Co-President of EMERG for 2023, Naama Hening of the Ministry of Transport of Israel, signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the ITU, which is the UN's specialised agency on Information and Communication Technologies.
"The aim is establishing a high-level cooperation framework between the two parties for joint actions in the field of electronic communications," the press release says.
It is further noted that a Joint Declaration of Cooperation was signed between EMERG, ITU and the Eastern Partnership Electronic Communications Regulators Network (EaPeReg), for joint action in areas of common interest such as mapping of broadband infrastructure and services, the recognition of good practices and facilitating the transfer of expertise.
In this context, a joint conference in the form of a workshop on the mapping of broadband infrastructures and services is planned, the announcement concludes.
