Prague: Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala on Saturday expressed concerns over the recently announced US tariffs, stating that they pose a threat to EU trade. Fiala emphasized the potential negative impact on transatlantic trade and underlined the importance of continued negotiations to prevent escalating economic tensions.

According to Anadolu Agency, Fiala showed support for ongoing diplomatic efforts, advocating for unity and a firm approach across the EU to protect economic interests and ensure fair treatment for European businesses. The announcement follows US President Trump's decision to impose 30% tariffs on the EU and Mexico starting August 1, which jeopardizes the US-EU trade talks. The EU had been aiming to finalize a comprehensive trade deal this month.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump revealed letters sent to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, informing them of the 30% tariff on goods entering the US from Europe and Mexico. In response, European Commission President von der Leyen expressed readiness to work towards an agreement with the US by the August deadline. She also pledged to take necessary actions to protect EU interests, including the implementation of proportionate countermeasures.
