Sidoarjo: The death toll from a collapsed school building in Indonesia's East Java province rose to 45 on Sunday, as rescue teams retrieved more bodies from the rubble.
According to Anadolu Agency, rescuers from the National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) retrieved another 19 victims from the rubble on Sunday. This raised the total death toll to 45, up from an earlier figure of 37 reported earlier in the day.
Basarnas' operations director Yudhi Bramantyo reported that a total of 149 individuals were evacuated from the site, with 45 confirmed dead and 104 survivors accounted for. This development reduced the number of missing persons to 18; however, this figure remains uncertain, as it is based on the student attendance list provided by the Islamic boarding school.
More than 60% of the debris has been cleared, but rescue teams continue to face challenges, including a piece of concrete connected to a neighboring building that has hindered operations. Abdul Muhari, head of the National Agency for Disaster Countermeasure's (BNPB) Disaster Data, Information and Communication Center, noted that a total of 167 students were affected by the collapse. Of these, 104 students have been found safe. Fourteen survivors are currently receiving treatment at hospitals, 89 have been discharged, and one has been transferred to another facility.
The Al Khoziny Islamic Boarding School in the town of Sidoarjo housed hundreds of students, mostly teenage boys, who were inside when the building collapsed on Monday. The initial collapse resulted in the deaths of at least five students and injuries to around 100 others.
