Cebu city: The death toll from Thursday's collapse of a landfill site in the Philippines rose to four on Saturday, as authorities continue their search efforts for dozens of trapped workers. The incident occurred at a private landfill facility around 4:17 pm in Cebu City, located in the Central Visayas region.

According to Anadolu Agency, the latest data reveals that 12 individuals have been transported to hospitals, with four fatalities confirmed. Efforts are underway to locate over 30 individuals who remain missing, as stated by Cebu City Mayor Nestor Archival on the US social media platform Facebook. "Authorities confirmed the presence of detected signs of life in specific areas, requiring continued careful excavation and the deployment of a more advanced 50-ton crane," he added.

The collapse involved 110 employees, as revealed by the mayor on Friday, and occurred at the Binaliw Landfill. The ongoing search and rescue operations are crucial, as teams work tirelessly to ensure the safety and recovery of those still trapped.

In a separate incident, the Filipino Quiapo Church administration reported on Saturday that four people lost their lives during an annual mass procession for the Feast of the Black Nazarene, according to GMA News Online. Church officials also noted that a photojournalist who died on Friday while covering the procession was not considered a casualty of the religious event. Furthermore, more than 1,050 medical cases were recorded during the festival.
