Deluge of Disasters: Scientists Warn Climate Crisis Fueling More Frequent, Deadlier Floods

Ankara: From South Asia's monsoon belts to America's southern plains, deadly floods are surging with increasing frequency and ferocity, killing hundreds and inflicting billions in losses. Scientists warn that climate change is intensifying rainfall patterns, transforming what were once 'rare disasters' into regular shocks that communities must now brace for every year.

According to Anadolu Agency, John Marsham, Met Office Joint Chair at the University of Leeds, stated that even small increases in global temperature dramatically increase the chances of unprecedented heat waves and floods. This summer's floods in China, India, Pakistan, South Korea, Yemen, and the US have underscored this reality, causing widespread destruction and displacement.

The monsoon-related floods have been particularly devastating in Asia. In northern Pakistan, torrential rains and flash floods have resulted in nearly 800 deaths since late June. In India, a flash flood in Uttarakhand left over 100 missing as torrents destroyed homes and buried villages. China's Gansu province saw at least 22 fatalities, while South Korea faced record rainfall causing 18 deaths and over 13,000 evacuations. Yemen and South Africa also experienced deadly flash floods, with significant casualties.

In the US, Texas was hit by flash floods in July, resulting in at least 135 deaths. Scientists attribute the increasing destructiveness of such events to global warming, which amplifies rainfall intensity. Carola Koenig from Brunel University of London explains that while the number of cyclones and hurricanes has not necessarily increased, their intensity has, leading to more rain and destructive power.

The UN reports that floods account for up to 40% of all weather-related disasters. Since 2000, flood disasters have increased by 134% compared to previous decades. Marsham highlights that flash floods, in particular, develop rapidly and are enhanced in areas where rain cannot soak into the ground, such as drought-affected regions.

Experts emphasize that the rise in global flooding is directly linked to climate change, driven by fossil fuel combustion. Marsham and Koenig stress the need to phase out fossil fuels to mitigate worsening floods. Vulnerable regions include areas with dense river systems, such as South and Southeast Asia, and coastal areas facing threats from storm surges and sea-level rise.

The message from scientists is clear: without curbing emissions and adapting infrastructure, flooding will continue to worsen globally. Koenig warns that global communities must prepare for increased flooding as climate impacts intensify.
