Ankara: Denmark has signed a $580 million contract with Kongsberg Defence and Aerospace to acquire the NASAMS air defense system, the Norwegian firm announced Thursday. This strategic move aims to bolster Copenhagen's national security by equipping it with advanced air defense capabilities.

According to Anadolu Agency, the deal will provide Denmark with what Kongsberg described as 'the most modern and advanced air defence capability in the world.' Eirik Lie, the head of Kongsberg, emphasized that this acquisition marks a significant step forward for Danish national security. He stated that the procurement will enhance the country's operational capabilities and improve its ability to effectively counter modern air threats. The agreement also strengthens the overall NASAMS air defense presence in the Nordic region.

The NASAMS package integrates Raytheon radars and missile variants with Kongsberg's Fire Distribution Center and multi-missile launchers. This modular, open-architecture system allows operators to incorporate new technologies and expand capabilities over time. It supports a mix of interceptors, including the AMRAAM, the extended-range AMRAAM-ER, and the AIM-9X Sidewinder, providing both medium- and short-range air defense coverage.

Kongsberg highlighted the system's flexibility, noting its 'growth potential' for longer-range air defense missions and anti-tactical ballistic missile capabilities as part of the broader NASAMS architecture. With this acquisition, Denmark becomes the 14th NASAMS user nation and the 8th within NATO, further expanding the system's reach across Europe and North America.
