Ankara: Dialogue and cooperation are the way to prosperity for future generations of Turks and Greeks, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said Thursday. Praising the improvement in relations between Trkiye and Greece in the last two years, Fidan highlighted the critical roles played by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis in fostering this positive change during an interview with the Greek daily Ta Nea. According to Anadolu Agency, President Erdogan's mission involves setting aside historical disputes between the two nations during this challenging period to act in unity and solidarity. Fidan emphasized Trkiye's vision of transforming the Aegean Sea into a sea of peace. He stressed the need to communicate to critics of the rapprochement between Turkey and Greece that national interests can only be secured through friendship and cooperation. Fidan noted the necessity for realistic approaches and accurate problem diagnoses to achieve this goal. He acknowledged that delimitation of maritime borders is just one of many interrelated disputes between the countries, urging that the time has come to address these issues through mutual respect and cooperation. When asked about his rapport with Greek Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis, Fidan emphasized the significance of maintaining honest and open dialogue to avert a crisis. Despite disagreements on various substantial matters, he pointed out the benefits already witnessed from keeping communication channels open. Regarding Greece's plan to establish a marine park in the Aegean Sea, despite Trkiye's objections, Fidan reiterated Trkiye's openness to cooperation with Greece on the issue. However, he cautioned that environmental protection should not be used for political gain. Fidan expressed optimism about the prospects of Turkish-Greek relations, asserting that dialogue and cooperation are essential for the security and prosperity of future generations. On the longstanding Cyprus issue, Fidan stated that all involv ed parties must understand that the 're-unification of the island' is not an option. Nevertheless, he indicated that seeking a solution is still possible if realities on the ground are acknowledged.
