Dialogue to begin with UNHCR on stranded persons in buffer zone, DepMin says

Deputy Minister of Migration and International Protection Nikolas Ioannides informed the House President Annita Demetriou that a structured dialogue is set to begin soon with the representatives of UNHCR in Cyprus, with the aim to solve the issue of the stranded persons in the buffer zone, a statement issued by the Parliament says. Ioannides had a meeting Thursday with Demetriou and informed her that the government is providing aid to these people, however it will not accept the transit to the buffer zone of flows of people coming from Turkey. He briefed the House President on the role of the new Deputy Ministry in effectively dealing with migration influxes as well as about its organizational and administrative structure. Ioannides also referred to the changes promoted by the government to the existing legislative framework and the bills that will be sent to the Parliament in the new plenary season. These changes, he said, will assist in further accelerating the procedures for examining asylum application s and the immediate repatriation of non-beneficiaries. Demetriou assured the Deputy Minister that the Parliament, being fully aware of the whole situation and the multiple challenges that Cyprus is facing, will proceed without delay in the examination of the legislative proposals that will be brought before the Parliament. She also informed the Deputy Minister about her efforts, as President of the Parliament, in the context of the practiced parliamentary diplomacy, to achieve synergies between all the countries affected by the irregular flows. Demetriou informed the Deputy Minister about her initiative, within the framework of the Conference of the Presidents of the Parliaments of the EU member states, in Palma de Mallorca last April, resulting in the first joint meeting of the Presidents of Cyprus, Greece, France, Italy, Spain, Portugal and Malta, with the participation of the European Parliament. During that meeting, a draft Joint Declaration was discussed, which was submitted on behalf of the Parliame nt in relation to the external dimension of the European migration policy, as part of a common approach for effective management of asylum and migration and dealing with migration flows in these member states of the South. Ioannides and the House President agreed to have a constant communication with the aim of jointly addressing the major challenges that Cyprus is faced with, as a country hosting refugees and irregular migrants.
