New york: The Walt Disney Company and OpenAI have announced a significant partnership, confirming a three-year content licensing agreement that will allow OpenAI's Sora to produce short, user-prompted videos featuring Disney's intellectual property.

According to Anadolu Agency, Sora will have access to a vast array of more than 200 animated, masked, and creature characters from Disney, Marvel, Pixar, and Star Wars. This includes a variety of costumes, vehicles, and iconic environments. Additionally, ChatGPT Images will be enabled to generate depictions based on the same intellectual property.

As part of the deal, Disney will make a $1 billion equity investment in OpenAI and receive warrants to purchase additional equity. Furthermore, Disney will become a major customer, leveraging OpenAI's APIs to develop new products and experiences, including enhancements for Disney+, and will deploy ChatGPT for internal use by employees.

The collaboration aims to release fan-inspired videos featuring Disney's licensed characters by early 2026. Curated selections of these Sora-generated videos will be available for streaming on Disney+.

Disney CEO Robert Iger highlighted the importance of artificial intelligence in the industry, stating that the collaboration with OpenAI will allow for the extension of storytelling through generative AI. OpenAI co-founder and CEO Sam Altman emphasized the partnership as a model for responsible innovation that respects creativity and helps works reach new audiences.

The agreement is subject to the negotiation of definitive agreements, corporate and board approvals, and customary closing conditions.
