ISTANBUL: The Dow Jones industrial average surged to a fresh record on Tuesday as US stocks opened the session on a mixed note. The blue-chip index, which includes 30 prominent American companies, jumped 501 points, or 1.25%, to 40,713 at 10.08 a.m. EDT (1408GMT). The S and P 500, meanwhile, added nine points, or 0.16%, to 5,640. The Nasdaq, on the other hand, decreased 70 points, or 0.38%, to 18,412. The VIX volatility index, also known as the fear index, rose 0.5% to 13.20. The 10-year US Treasury yield fell 0.55% to 4.206%. The dollar index added 0.2% to reach 104.40, while the euro decreased 0.12% to $1.0881 against the greenback. Precious metals were in positive territory, with gold rising 0.8% to $2,441 per ounce and silver increasing 0.3% to $30.77.
