Drogheda: Irish club Drogheda United will face Trabzonspor in Trkiye on Oct. 1 in a match highlighting longstanding ties between the Irish town and Trkiye, the club said Wednesday.

According to Anadolu Agency, the match will be played at Trabzonspor's Papara Park and will mark Drogheda United's first appearance in Trkiye. The fixture comes as Ireland and Trkiye mark the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations and will form part of events highlighting historical links between the two countries.

It will also feature in an independently produced documentary, 'An Gorta Mor - The Star and The Crescent,' which examines Ottoman humanitarian assistance to Ireland during the Great Famine and the historical relationship between Drogheda and Trkiye. The documentary will also explore how those ties have continued through the relationship between Drogheda United, Trabzonspor and their supporters. It is expected to be broadcast on Turkish television.

Drogheda has a longstanding association with the star and crescent, which appears on the town's coat of arms. Ties between Drogheda United and Turkish football supporters have also developed in recent years, particularly through links with Trabzonspor.

Drogheda United CEO Rian Wogan said the match would bring supporters from Ireland and Trkiye together in Trabzon. He added that the club would work with the Drogheda and District Chamber during the visit to help develop business links between Drogheda and Trkiye. The club said further details on ticketing and travel arrangements for supporters would be announced ahead of the match.
